Considerations when choosing a Garden Tractor

Please use the following information as an outline guide to aid you in the purchase of your garden tractor.

What size of tractor

Simply put, the size of tractor you select will be dependant upon how quickly you want to cut your grass.

Collection Method

Collect:

For the best collection performance please select from one of our range of Direct Collect Models. Our Direct Collect® system has been specifically designed to cope with lush and wet grass plus the normal damp conditions usually found throughout the U.K. This system eliminates the need for a powered sweeper. There are no expensive to replace moving parts such as bearings, brushes, belts and pulleys. Grass is thrown direct from the specially designed blades without touching the ground through a large opening between the rear wheels and directly into the catcher, where the grass circulates and is evenly distributed until the bag is full.

Side discharge:

If you need to manage a less formal area where collection is not essential and time is of the essence. Then to avoid the need to collect and dispose of the cuttings we offer a range of side discharge models. These units are ideal for areas such as small paddocks and the rougher areas of grass. Many of our side discharge models are available with optional collection kits.

Mulch:

The majority of our tractors offer the ability to mulch. This comes as standard on our 3 in 1 models that collect, discharge or mulch, and as an optional extra to our other models (excluding the 603 and 604 model). Mulching is ideal where you wish to achieve a "tidy", rather than a more "formal" finish, and where you wish to add the nutrients from the clippings back into the lawn rather than recycle them in the compost heap. Please remember that when mulching you will not be able to cut as low as when you are collecting the grass clippings and will need to cut on a more regular basis.

3 in 1:

Many of our tractors offer, either as standard or with optional extras, the ability to discharge (side or rear), mulch or collect. This gives the user versatility in all conditions.

Drive systems

Transmatic:

Offers an Infinitely variable foot operated system that allows "smooth change on the Move" acceleration from neutral to a selectable top speed.

AutoDrive:

This revolutionary system gives all the benefits of gearless forward motion and is operated by a single foot pedal. Just press the pedal to speed up and take your foot off the pedal to stop. This is essential when operating in difficult areas where easy change of speed is required.

Hydrostatic Transmission:

Gives the ultimate luxury of gearless, forward to reverse motion by the movement of a single rocker pedal. You can vary the speed and slip effortlessly from forward drive into reverse, allowing both hands to remain on the steering wheel.

Power:

We have specially selected the best engines for the relevant model, but please take into account in your selection whether you have slopes in your garden, if so, then you should purchase the more powerful end of the horsepower than the above table suggest. Also select a tractor with either a Kawasaki or Kohler engine as these engines feature pumped lubrication, which is essential when cutting on gradients to ensure full lubrication at all times.

If economy is your key concern then our Cub Cadet CC1000 Diesel powered direct collect machine is the answer.

Size:

There is a direct relationship between cutting width and cutting time, but do not forget to consider other essential factors.

Do you have access problems, is this limited to the width of a standard garden gate. Is your lawn split into several smaller areas where size and manoeuvrability is key, in this case you may select a smaller tractor than the table suggests. If manoeuvrability is your key concern then, our range of tractors offers a turning circle of from 46cm/18" (model 803) to a maximum of 69cm/27" (model 604). But, for the ultimate performance please consider our unique Cub Cadet AllRounder with its zero turn capability storage space can often be at a premium, our direct collect models have an easily removable grass collector that reduces the storage space required.

Safety:

All Direct collect tractors have safety switches on the cutter deck, reverse gear and the seat. These safety switches cut out the engine if the operator leaves the seat whilst the tractor is in motion or if the cutter deck and reverse gear are selected at the same time. Our Cub Cadet range offers a "Cut in reverse system" allowing operator override.

Special requirements

Offset Cutting decks:

All our tractors feature offset cutting decks. The decks are offset to the left hand side, and overlap both the front and rear wheels; this will enable you to cut close to walls, fences and borders.

Undulating ground:

Many of our tractor decks come fitted with anti-scalping wheels that enables the deck to follow the contours of the land.

Towed accessories:

All our tractors (except the MiniRider ES) come fitted with a tow bar that will enable you to maximize the use of the tractor by the addition of our excellent full range of Agri-Fab accessories.

Considerations when choosing a Rotary Mower

There is a huge variety of mowers on the market today: please let us help you select the correct one for your garden.

Collection Method

Consider the finish you require...

Collect:

All our Rotary Lawnmowers have been specifically designed to cope with lush and wet grass plus the normal damp conditions usually found throughout the U.K. Grass is thrown direct from the specially designed blades without touching the ground through a large opening between the rear wheels and directly into the catcher, where the grass circulates and is evenly distributed until the bag is full.

Rear or side Eject:

If you need to manage a less formal area where collection is not essential and time is of the essence. Then to avoid the need to collect and dispose of the cuttings we offer a range of rear or side discharge models. This is achieved either through the built in deflector chute or by the fitment of an optional deflector chute. Please see product specifications for more detail.

Mulch:

This feature comes as standard on all our 3 in 1 models that collect, discharge or mulch, and as an optional extra to other models in our selected range.

Leaf collection:

All our petrol driven rotary lawnmowers make an excellent job of collecting fallen leaves from the lawn. But please remember, to obtain the best results, collect when dry and set the cutter height to achieve the best collection results.

Tidy:

If you require a tidy, rather than a formal finish, then we would suggest that you choose a 4 wheeled model. Our High Wheel, 4 wheeled models, deal with undulations and the rougher areas.

Formal:

If you require a more formal lawn finish, complete with the traditional British stripe, then you should consider selecting a rear roller mower. These are available with several specifications, so check our range for details. If it is important that the mower is light weight, then select one of our Lawnflite 991 range, which have ABS/Poly decks: if you want the choice of the professionals, then select a Lawnflite Pro aluminium decked shaft driven roller mower. Rear roller rotaries are ideal for cutting over the edge of borders without scalping the grass.

Perfection:

For absolute perfection, please look to our range of cylinder mowers.

Please be aware that cylinder mowers should only be used on good quality lawns and are not suitable for rough areas. The cylinder mowers in the Lawnflite Pro range are very highly specified units often used by bowling clubs etc, so are designed for precision, hard work and long life.

Finally, if you are concerned about starting a petrol mower, choose one of our three models of electric start. All you then need to do is turn the key!

Buying a Mower or Tractor for the first time or indeed at anytime can be confusing. We at Seriousmowers have tried to make that decision process easier for you, but, if you have any questions not covered by the above we would be delighted to talk to you.
